3. Clear, prompt communication

How someone communicates before you hire is how they'll communicate during the project. Fast, clear replies now mean fewer surprises later.

4. Relevant, not just impressive, work

A stunning portfolio in a different style or industry may not translate. Look for samples close to what you actually need.

5. Honest scoping

Freelancers who tell you what they can't do, or push back on an unrealistic timeline, are protecting your project. Take it as a green flag, not a red one.
